In Japan artists have long enjoyed making pictures of people engaged in art and craft making.

The full circle is achieved by artists using hand-made paper ( washi ) to show pictures of people making hand-made paper.

The following ukiyo-e woodcut, displayed by the Library of Congress ( ), was published between 1772 and 1801. The print shows paper being made by dipping a frame into a vat of water and pulp, and stacking the sheets to one side.
