Biographical: Dr Monika dos Santos is an internationally recognized and well published psychologist who is currently completing a second PhD in Clinical Psychology, with a focus area on HIV and mental health comorbidity. She has project managed numerous projects in the field of heroin use disorders, psychiatric illness, stigma and HIV. Dr dos Santos is experienced in the design, development, analysis and implementation of research studies and psychiatric/substance dependence therapeutic programs within the human sciences field. She is also experienced in chairing multi-disciplinary teams. Her current focus is on developing research proposals, generating funds, managing research projects and writing research publications with the goal of the translation of research results and syntheses of research-based knowledge into policy and service developments in South Africa and internationally. She is currently involved in large international research projects concerning HIV/AIDS, stigma, gender based violence and substance use disorders. She also conceptualized and initiated the FPD Research Ethics Committee. Dr dos Santos was recently consulted to provide specialist input regarding the IDU risk population group for the upcoming revised South African National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS, STIs and TB (2012-2016), and currently serves as a member on the IDU Technical Working Group. She also serves at an adjunct lecturer for doctoral and masters psychology students at the University of South Africa (UNISA). She previously worked in therapeutic capacities at Vista Psychiatric Clinic and the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA). Dr dos Santos serves/served on the following boards and committees: Research Portfolio: SANCA National Directorate, Data and Safety Monitoring Board: South African Medical Research Council, Technical Working Group – HIV and drug use/injecting drug use technical working group – HIV National Strategic Plan (Central Drug Authority, UNODC, UNAIDS), and the Foundation for Professional Development Research Ethics Committee (FPDREC) – secretary of committee.
