Work: Gian Paolo Cimellaro is a structural engineer, that had the degree in Civil Engineering cum laude on 2001 from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He is Professional Engineering (P.E.) of the Bulletin Board of Engineers of Rome since 2001. He received the M.S. degree in Earthquake Engineering from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in 2004. He received the Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering curriculum structural- seismic from the University of Pavia in 2007 and the Ph.D. degree from the University at Buffalo in 2008. He has been postdoctoral research associate from January 2008 until December 2008. He is serving as Assistant professor since 2008 in the Polytechnic of Turin, in Italy. He has been visiting researcher at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in 2003. He has worked as consultant engineer in Hydraulic Engineer in 2003. He has been visiting professor at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in April-June 2009. Dr. Cimellaro current research interests include disaster resilience, probabilistic methods, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, structural vibration control using active, passive and semi-active Control systems and experimental research laboratory activities on the shaking table. Some of his research has focused on developing integrated regional models for estimating losses from future earthquakes, focusing in particular in health care facilities. His current research addresses community disaster resilience and sustainability, mitigation of health care systems risks. He has authored 20 journal refereed papers published and 39 international conference proceedings, and 2 book chapters. He has been invited to more than 12 seminars in US and Canada and Europe. He has advised several graduate students. He is referee of many international journals: Journal of Structural Engineering, ASCE Earthquake Spectra, Engineering Structures, Journal of Structural Control and Health Monitoring, Journal of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, MCEER Reports. He is member of the following institutions: American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE); Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI); American Institute of Steel Constructions (AISC); Student Leadership Council of MCEER (SLC); Gruppo Nazionale di Fisica Matematica (GNFM); Associazione italiana cemento (AIC); In 2001, he awarded a three years Research scholarship of the Italian Ministry of Education and Research and started to work in the University of Rome. In 2004, he got a scholarship for the "frequency of activity of improvement in a foreign country" from the University of Rome. While working at MCEER (Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering and Research), He was collaborating with the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), where he got in 2005 a two years research grant for supporting research activities in the ICARUS project*, directed by professor Carlo Rubbia (Nobel Prize Winner in Physic). In 2007 he got a Marie Curie Scholarship for the course on "Semi-active Vibration Suppression - The Best from Active and Passive Technologies", held at CISM (International Center for Mechanical Science), in Udine, Italy. *The ICARUS project is a physical experiment proposed in 1985 by Professor Carlo Rubbia and has been developed in The Gran Sasso physics laboratory. The project has the goal to study the proton decay and the physic of the neutrinos using the ICARUS detector.
