Biographical: Mahalingam Govindaraj is a Scientist in Dryland Cereals Program at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), India. He received Masters Degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), and Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the same University with research collaborations between TNAU and ICRISAT. Prior to this position he had brief period as Senior Research Fellow at Sugarcane Research Station, Gudiyatham, and Visiting Scientist in HarvestPlus at ICRISAT. Since from the very beginning he has been engaged in pearl millet biofortification research at ICRISAT and he is co-breeder of a first biofortified high-iron variety ‘Dhanashakti’ which was released in 2014 at All India level. His research mainly focuses on developing high-iron pearl millet hybrid parents and hybrids. He has on-going HarvestPlus research and development projects in India and more recently in Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger) focusing on high-iron pearl millet cultivar development and strengthening research partnership in India and Africa. He has published more than 30 research articles, reviews and book chapters, and served as a peer reviewer for Journal of Tropical Agriculture, African Journal of Agricultural Research, Journal of Crop Science and Biotechnology.He has been recognized with Resource Mobilizer Award in 2014 by ICRISAT and International Scholar Award by the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI), Georgia, USA for the best PhD research on plant nutrition in 2009. He is an active life member of Indian Society for Plant Breeders, Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, and Society for Millet Research.
