Biographical: René Teijgeler is an anthropologist and a conservator and is the owner of Culture in Development. He started his academic career in 1970 with his studies in Sociology and Social Psychology. As he developed a taste for books he started studying book and paper conservation. A year later he was appointed conservator at the National Library. As his interests took him to preservation cultures outside Europe he continued his academic training in Anthropology, for which he obtained an honorary degree in 1996.Working for Fair Trade NL he got acquainted with the ins and outs of development aid. Noticing the ethnocentric approach in culture and heritage projects in developing countries he decided to apply the principles of development (aid) to culture and heritage. In order to be sent to Iraq as the senior consultant for the Ministry of Culture he joined the Dutch reserves and now holds the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He spent 7 months in Iraq and 6 months as the cultural advisor for the commander of the ISAF troops in South Afghanistan. One of his last assignments is to design and implement the policy framework to stop the illicit trade in artefacts in Afghanistan for UNESCO.After his publications for the Royal Library, the International Council on Archives and the European Commission on Preservation and Access he widened his experiences with projects in museums and finally monuments and archaeological sites. As the senior consultant for the Ministry of Culture in Iraq he could well make use of all his experiences and his broad education. Since, he advised many organizations as UNESCO and ICCROM, has lectured in many capitals and publishes many an article. One of his last assignments was to give advice to UNESCO on the protection of cultural heritage in several countries during the so-called ‘Arabic spring.’ For a full CV see my website http://www.cultureindevelopment.nl/About_Culture_in_Development/Rene_Teijgeler
