Dear Chris,

I work at an anthropology museum in Japan, and have long been interested in the paper mulberry tree, from which paper is made in East Asia and barkcloth in Indonesia and the Pacific Islands.

Indonesia has an old tradition of very fine barkcloth called daluwang that is functions as a paper used for painting and writing. When Islam arrived in the region, this local material was used for local production of Islamic texts, and I wonder if a similar thing happened when the Catholic church arrived. Does the Vatican museum keep any copies of early texts produced in Indonesia, and sent back to Europe? It is possible that daluwang is in the collections, but not yet recognised.

Who can be contacted to ask about this?

Any advice is welcome.

Best regards, Peter (Kyoto, Japan)
