Work: Animal waste and water pollution in Nigeria
Biographical: Veterinary Public Health: Bovine Tuberculosis as a zoonosis
Dear Dr Nafarnda,New Zealand has a wet and cool climate, unlike Nigeria, but also has a huge problem with animal waste from pastures, and also with Bovine Tuberculosis. The disease has also been found to be transmitted to cattle from wild animals that fall sick with the same disease, and then enter pasture areas and attract the attention of inquisitive leader cows (the cows sometimes lick the bodies of dying possums; I do not know how common this is, but a night-video recording has been made and shows it happening). Now some researchers have started introducing dung beetles to try and improve the disposal of animal waste, and improve soils at the same time. Which leads me to wonder, what will happen to the dung beetles? Will they become a new food source for some other animal (rats?), leading to some new set of problems? I hope not.
