Biographical: English GARETHMD1@sky.com Profile: Gareth Evans is a Principal Scientist within the Occupational Hygiene unit and is responsible for the technical leaderships for large programmes of research focussing on the causes of occupational disease. He has worked with Dr Lesley Rushton (Imperial College, London) over the last seven years to complete a comprehensive update of the numbers of cancers in GB attributable to exposure to occupational carcinogens and carcinogenic substances. This work was published in June 2012 as a series of 23 technical reports for the Health and Safety Executive and as a 13-paper supplement in the British Journal of Cancer. Gareth has also recently completed for HSE an evidence summary about the harmful effects of lead in adults exposed at levels lower than the current action and suspension limits defined by the GB CLAW legislation (2002). Other work has included investigation of chemical and biological causes of occupational respiratory disease caused by exposure to ‘used’ metal working fluids and food allergens. He is part of team that deliver systematic reviews for HSE and other external bodies. His subject expertise is toxicology (particularly immunology and carcinogenesis) and the use of alternative toxicity tests to replace animals. In addition he is involved in work to communicate knowledge about occupational hazards to non-technical audiences. Gareth has published 86 peer-reviewed papers with another 13 papers currently in proof stage, he has written seven book chapters, and is an author of over thirty technical reports written for HSE and other Government Departments. He is technical reviewer for the European Respiratory Journal, Journal of Occupational Medicine, Journal of Environmental Monitoring, Annals of Occupational Hygiene, and Toxicology Letters. Qualifications B.Sc. Ph.D. Career History: After taking his first degree in Zoology, Gareth studied for a PhD in cancer biology at the Tenovus Institute for Cancer Research (University College of Medicine, Cardiff). This was followed by post-doctoral training at the Cancer Research Campaign Paterson Institute at the Christie Hospital in Manchester where he later took up appointment as CRC Postdoctoral research fellow in the laboratory of Professor CS Potten. He was appointed to a non-clinical lectureship at the Department of Child Health at Sheffield University in 1994 and from 2000 was the Postgraduate tutor at the Medical School in the University of Sheffield. In 2002 he took up an appointment as Head of the Health Exposure Unit at the Health & Safety Laboratory and on the formation of a combined Occupational Hygiene Unit in 2009 took on the role as a principle technical lead for developing toxicology services at HSL.
