Dear Yameen,

I work with taro ('cocoyam' in Africa), which often appears as a companion crop alongside rice in Asia. Rice cultivation is relatively new in most of Africa, so I wonder if farmers have found ways to effectively manage it together with other crops. Farming is not just a system for producing food, it is also a system for providing useful work and income, and balancing ecology and economics, from the village level to the national level. Rice straw can be an important contribution to soil ecology - it can be a multiple-purpose crop, and this needs to be taken into account in selection and breeding plans.
