The Research Cooperative, a new website to support academic editing and translation

The article was written very soon after first conception and construction of a website for the network. At that time, the network was hosted on the private server of a New Zealand-based researcher and programmer, Dr Cees Lensink. At my request, Dr Lensink modified a standard, open source PHP bulletin board system in order to create an early form of online, interactive social network. The limitations and difficulties faced while building and using this network was good preparation for taking advantage of the customizable, generic social network system developed later by Ning.com.
