Our market niche
Our 'market niche' is the world community of people who are already involved in research and research communication, and those who are on the edges and would like to be more involved.
There is always work to do.
Through the internet, it is easy to find many sites that advertise academic jobs, or professional, full-cost editing, translation, and other language services.
As far as we know, this is the only site where people at all levels of experience can meet and create opportunities for themselves and others, within the world of research communication.
Our market niche is an international community that should:
(a) give opportunities for gaining experience to younger people (research writers, editors, translators, and others), regardless of their economic and geographical situation, and
(b) allow experienced writers, editors, translators and others to communicate their needs and services effectively.
Funding for research is generally very limited, so we need to communicate the results of research in useful and cost-effective ways, in order to maintain or increase support for research.
We also need to ensure that people who have received higher education can use their experience creatively and effectively, regardless of their social, economic, and geographical situations.
No other site allows research writers without supporting funds to seek volunteer specialists to comment on a manuscript that may have excellent content but poor presentation (or vice versa).
No other site allows people who think they might enjoy scientific writing, editing or translation to offer help as learners, so that they can gain experience 'on the job' and eventually become professional in a particular area.
No other site encourages participation from such a wide range of research clients and professional communication services.
We welcome membership by public and private research organisations, public and private publishers, professional service companies, and individuals.
We are not trying to sell anything to an existing narrow or special market. We are trying to broaden a niche market (academic research writing) by offering pathways for better communication among people who create information. Our aim is to try and give the searchers and search engines better information to search for. In this respect, our 'niche' is global.
In many subject areas, the world is overflowing with research information. In these areas, our concern is primarily with quality, not quantity.
There are also many important - or potentially important - subjects that are neglected by research organisations and communities.
The world is not overflowing in all kinds of information, so our concern is also to encourage better communication from outside the mainstream subjects and disciplines.
Practically, we can do this by letting people create their own job definitions, when making offers and requests.
