The Science Communication Lab (SCL) is searching for a Civic Science Fellow to join our non-profit team and help us improve our understanding of the role of documentary film in engaging the public with science.

The Civic Science Fellow will contribute to the crucial early stages of understanding science film’s potential through leading a project to provide a more complete and data-driven picture of the world of science filmmaking and audience engagement. This work will benefit people across sectors of civic science, including scientists looking to communicate with the public, filmmakers interested in telling the stories of science, and science communication researchers and other practitioners who want to further understand the power of this medium.

The SCL Civic Science Fellow is an excellent position for someone with experience and interests in science communication and/or education research and evaluation, public engagement, and other aspects of civic science. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work with diverse partners, including scientists, educators, and filmmakers, among others. In addition to joining SCL, the individual will be part of the Civic Science Fellows program, led by the Rita Allen Foundation . Civic Science Fellows benefit from a network of Fellows at other institutions and civic science professional development, including leadership skills, and mentoring.

About Science Communication Lab:

The Science Communication Lab (SCL) is a leader in the production of high-quality documentary science content. Our feature-length films Human Nature and Picture A Scientist were both critically acclaimed and nominated for Emmy Awards. Our short films, produced with an NSF grant, are designed for reaching audiences with a range of scientific knowledge and feature a diversity of voices. Our organization was founded by scientists and we are determined to apply a scientific approach to our efforts. Consequently, we put as much effort into researching effective science communication through film, evaluating our work, and engaging the public with our films and findings as we do in creating the film products themselves.
