Transcribing written texts from handwriting to digital format is often needed in historical research, or in the transcription of handwritten field notes.

2. Audio to text.

Transcription is perhaps most often needed when converting a recorded interview or conference presentation into a text.

In Japan, it is common for conference proceedings to be published based on the transcriptions of recorded presentations, whcih are edited before final publication. This is a good way to produce a conference record quickly, and it can be followed later by publications with more formally written articles.
