Since 2009, it has been possible for any registered researcher based in Japan to submit research grant applications in English to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

This will be a great help for non-native, foreign-trained scientists working in Japan, as it is unusual for specialists in most disciplines to learn Japanese as part of their training in another country.

For the first time since I began working in Japan in 1990, I was able to prepare a full application in English, for submission last week. Wish me luck!

Previously, only researchers based outside Japan could use English to apply for grants, when aiming to work here as temporary visitors.

The new system will not be easy for Japanese administrators and scientific reviewers, and grant applicants will have to take special care to write very clearly.
