In recent years, it has became rapidly easier to navigate at least part way into the academic world of Japan using English-language signposts. A website called "Academic Society HomeVillage" has signposts for many different academic associations, societies and organisations, and provides advance warning of the languages used by each group (usually Japanese only, but not always).

The site is supported by the National Institute of Informatics, Japan (NII).

With the keywords I found the following:

Ethnology = Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology

Anthropology = Japan Society of Physiological Anthropology (Japanese only)

Archaeological = The Japanese Archaeological Association

Folk = The Japan Society of Folk-Literature and Traditions (Japanese only)

Archaeology/archeology/prehistory and folklore gave no entries, which means that the system lacks depth in suitable keywords to accompany the information provided by the various academic societies.

So - if you are looking for something specific, please try a variety of related terms to find all the relevant groups!
