Here is a website that introduces the eight officially-recognised universities in New Zealand, and explains the university system:

A big surprise to me is a 2010 R&D survey showing that universities manage just 1/3 of research and development activities, in terms of spending, and that business R&D is larger -- nationally.

I wonder to what extent editing and translation services are employed in business R&D?

Maybe not much as most of the research is likely to be for in-house reading, by a very limited audience.

Perhaps a cost-benefit analysis for research should include a multiplier based on readership or audience size:

Research cost-benefit = (Content x Readers) / (Research + publishing costs)

A simple form of this might assume that all content is equal, and that what matters most is how much content is assimilated by readers, regardless of subsequent use or non-use of the information. Judging how, when and where information is useful is hard to to do when some kinds of information have value for indefinite and long periods of time, or value for readers far outside of the academic world.

Here is a list of NZ universities

1 University of Auckland, Auckland
2 University of Otago, Dunedin
3 Massey University, Palmerston North & other locations
4 University of Waikato, Hamilton & other locations
5 University of Canterbury, Christchurch
6 Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington
7 AUT University, Auckland
8 Lincoln University, Christchurch

I would like to learn more about the publishing efforts and methods of all these universities.
