The Royal Society of New Zealand's Science Media Centre is taking applications for its two-day workshops aimed at scientists and researchers keen to work with the media to communicate their science. Designed specifically to orient scientists and researchers to the realities of a rapidly changing media environment, Science Media SAVVY offers practical skills and experience that will help participants work more effectively with journalists.
The individualised media training and feedback provided can accommodate a range of experience levels, from intensive introduction, to master class for seasoned science communicators.
Significant opportunities to hear from working journalists during a newsroom tour, media discussion panel, and chance to pitch a story to journalists are a unique strength of the course. Other highlights include: - On-camera interview practice and feedback - Social media and blogging primer - Handling the first phone call - Hearing firsthand from media-savvy scientists - Working with your communications office Science Media SAVVY workshops are led by Peter Griffin and Dacia Herbulock of the Science Media Centre, with support from veteran media trainer Michael Brown of Skillset NZ. Workshops are limited to 12 participants to ensure maximum interaction. A scholarship is available to allow one PhD student to complete each Science Media SAVVY course.
