Biographical: Currently I'm employed by the Waste Services department of a Scottish Local Authority doing communications and development work focusing on waste reduction, recycling, composting programme for households. We've recently introduced a weekly household food waste collection, which has required a lot of effort and attention. Previously, in Scotland, I've set up, publicised and run a home composting campaign for a Landfill Tax Trust; Co-ordinated development of a regional Local Agenda 21 Plan for Roundtable of local organisations involved with sustainable development; and was International Editor for BioCycle, Journal of Composting and Recycling. Before relocating to Scotland, I wrote, edited and managed production for several publications relating to composting, recycling, sustainable development, environmental business and organic gardening. Also have some hands on experience with community economic development and community involvement in policy decisions and implementation.

Over a number of years working with BioCycle magazine, I wrote some articles on anaerobic digestion. Hi Peter. I don't know that particular book, but the title sounds very apropos. Anaerobic digestion appeals to some companies with quantities of highly putrescible wastes (like food) because of the dual benefits of the process. The anaerobic bacteria that do the work produce methane and other gases as a byproduct which can be captured for energy generation. Then the stablilised 'digestate' (not really a 'compost' as the composting process is aerobic, as you say) can be used as soil conditioner in some cases, or blended with other feedstocks for further composting. Supermarkets looking for a better way to handle inedible food wastes would be logical users of this technology which has improved over the past 10 years or so. In the UK the Government seems quite keen to promote AD, but in-vessel composting is still a valid option. As always, much depends on available processors within a reasonable distance, and the costs involved. In any case, either technology is a much more sustainable option than burying food waste in landfills where it contributes significantly to climate change.

Dear David,I just started reading an excellent book (though heavy in all respects) by Tristam Stuart: Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal (Penguin Books, 2009)In his chapter on supermarkets, he mentions that some supermarket chains have started to collaborate with industrial-scale anaerobic composting companies. This was a surprise to me, as I have only looked at agricultural and garden composting, which is typically aerobic. He will have more to say in his chapter on composting, I expect.Cheers, Peter
