This is a neutron detector before upgrading. We use it to measure neutron cross sections of fissile and other reactor materials, and also other effects, using TOF method at 1006-meter flight base of the installation, known as 'pulsed reactor IBR-30 (JINR, Dubna)'.
It has 400 liters of liquid scintillator and fast enough /10 nanosecond/ photoelectronic amplifiers.
Compared to usual scintillator NaJ(Tl), it is much faster and is not activated in significant neutron fluxes. All this factors give an opportunity to achieve good energy resolution /in (nsec/meter)/ and good effectiveness.
