Please help me edit

Editing - REQUESTS

Are you looking for volunteer help?

Can you pay a foreign professional editor at an international rate?

or

A local professional editor at a local rate?

It is OK to ask for volunteer help -- and you need to ask, if this is what you want, so people know!

Thanks for using our forums.

Professional indexing required for conference volume

Indexing - REQUESTS

Dear Mary,

My RA interpreted more of the information from our Publication Office (I don't speak Japanese well at all) and I have learned that a budget request can be made for

(i) a standard page rate (which is arbitratry and based on writing fees paid to certain kinds of contributing author for certain museum publications), or

(ii) and expected cost based on a full quote by professional editor/translator or similar (indexing fits this category).

This means you can provide me with quotes based on your usual costing for the work, and then I can discover how much the museum is willing to offer. Our office has had some experience of indexing, but not with the help of professional indexers. I am keen to introduce the practice of professional indexing to our publications department.

Thanks, Peter

Professional indexing required for conference volume

Indexing - REQUESTS

I am currently editing a volume with 16 contributors, approx. 200 pages, and 60,000 words.

The subject matter concerns the history of a food plant, viewed from the perspectives of archaeology, linguistics, ethnography, natural history, and social history.

I would like to discuss the likely costs of indexing this volume using a combination of machine indexing, manual indexing, and my editorial input.

A short draft index, for scoping purposes, has been prepared, and can be sent to interested parties.

Deadline for finding a contractor is late December. Deadline for an index is probably late January. The book will be published before the end of March 2012.

Please contact me by reply to this message. Thanks.

Dr Peter Matthews, National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, Japan

advice me please

Services archive

Dear Asase,

(1) I shifted your request into a more appropriate forum.

(2) You need to give more context so that people can help you:

What kind or level of research are you aiming for? An undergraduate essay based on literature research? An MSc research topic? A PhD research topic? What are your circumstances?

Edit

Editing - REQUESTS

Dear Ahmed,

You need to say "Please" at least, and then say what kind of editing work is needed, for what kind of project, and then place the request in the correct forum (I have moved it to Editing requests).

Our network was not established to support editing for undergraduate essays for example, unless they have already been assessed and are being prepared for a particular research publication.

If you can say more about the work in the first message, then others may take the time to look at the attachments.

In any case, good luck.

Regards, Peter (Admin.)

Dynamic map of Europe 1 AD - 2000 AD

Translation - OFFERS

Dear Thomas,

A very interesting set of maps. Life on the continent has been complicated!

Which means that the role of migration and translation between all the different fragments of Eurasia has also been complicated, forever.

I am relocating this message in the Translation offers forum, since your signature makes it clear that you have much to offer as a translator.

Best regards, Peter, Admin.

Translation of botanical Dutch to English

Translation - REQUESTS

Hi folks - I should have written earlier. I did find a translator, and this job has been completed.

By chance, in the same month, an English translation of the book concerned was published for the first time since the 18th C original publication in Latin and Old Dutch, but I did not know that a translation was under way when I made my request here.

Now I have two translations to work with, which is not a bad thing, given the many different ways that translation can be done with any particular text.

Translation of botanical Dutch to English

Translation - REQUESTS

I have a short text from Rumphius (1741-1756) Herbarium Amboinensis that needs to be translated into English from Dutch. I am able to pay a professional fee for this, for someone with suitable experience.

Please contact me by reply to this message.

Thanks, Peter Matthews (National Museum of Ethnology, Japan)

An Academic Help Request

Services archive

Dear Minoo,

Please explain the purpose of the questionnaire more clearly. The title indicates an academic help request which probably means you are looking for volunteers, but please explain this and opther matters directly first, so other people can decide whether or not your request is genuine, and whether or not they want to click on the link.

1) Are you looking for volunteers?

2) What kind of academic project this is for? Are you working for someone else?

3) Who is collecting the data?

4) Will private or personal-identifying information be collected or not? If yes, is privacy assured?

5) Will participants be told about the results at the end of the survey period?

6) What is the survey period? i.e. what is the deadline for answering this questionnaire.

Unless you make an effort to explain what you are doing, you cannot expect people to volunteer to give their time to the project.

Good luck!

Peter (Admin., Research Co-op)
