I guess "Career Zoo" refers to the jungle of work that exists in world inside and beyond academia. An open-air zoo perhaps.

There are many possible niches in society for people with a scientific training, and scientists of all people should be able to create work opportunities for themselves, and for others.

I wonder what the Irish Career Zoo is really about! The Research Cooperative itself is already a kind of zoo, if we look at the diversity of our members.

The World is facing another recession!

Services archive

The Research Cooperative was created primarily to promote communication, and giving attention to the causes and consequences of a world recession is surely a good cause, so...

Here is another project idea suitable for our network:

Support a newly formed journal (January 2011) that aims to explore how sustainable and socially-beneficial businesses can help reduce poverty and unemployment.

See the Journal of Social Business .

Support can be offered in various ways:

1. Read the journal, learn from it, and use the ideas.

2. Write for the journal if you have original material suitable for the publication.

3. Offer to help translate journal contents pages and/or articles for the journal to publish, or privately for others who cannot easily read English, but are interested in the journal contents.

4. Offer to translate articles into English for contributors to the journal who cannot write well enough in English.

5. Offer to review or edit articles for contributors to the journal before they are submitted, as a volunteer or as a paid professional.

6. Tell others about the journal and encourage them to read it; and also tell them about the present proposal to support the journal, in the various ways suggested above.

Thank you.

Any further suggestions for this list are welcome!

Here is a book would like to see translated into other languages

Tim Jackson (2009)

Prosperity Without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet.

Earthscan, London and Washington DC

A communication project of this sort could be a good aim for members of the Co-op.

Publication of an Article

Dear Francis,

Please try posting a message with more information about your work and writing plans or questions in our group for writing advice.

To help others help you, you need to give more background information (context):

1. Your general research area

2. A working title for the project and paper you are working on.

3. Your apprroximate deadlines (late 2011? Or 2012, 2013?)

4. What kind of paper you want to write: Review? Original theoretical? Original descriptive/observational?

5. What kind of audience you would like to reach with the paper.

6. What kind or journal you would like to publish in, or specific journals you would like to aim for.

Then you can offer to send an outline of your planned paper to a possible editor/advisor/reviewer for intial discussion and advice.

Seminar: Unity as a focus for effective research writing and editing

Services archive

Dear Rick,

Is it hard to spot? Few members use it an I suspect the Ning company has made a basic design error (but maybe I can do something to make it better).

The link sits at bottom left under the message board in each group page. Members generally overlook it and scroll to the Comments and use that option.

Thanks for being persistent!

Seminar: Unity as a focus for effective research writing and editing

Dear Rick,

I am now gradually setting up both language and country focus pages for the network, in order to maximise the opportunities for people to meet each other through common interests.

For Japan we have both the country page mentioned above, and also a Japanese language page. If you have joined or can join both groups, then your message can be copied to both places (ideally, in Japanese on the Japanese language page, but not necessarily).

http://researchcooperative.org/group/japanese

Please use the + Send message method, not comments, because messages will be sent automatically to all members of each group. Comments only get seen when people choose to visit the page with comments.

Thanks, Peter

e-PD and on-line professional development for teachers in schools

Dear Donna,

As a starting point, I have just now searched the work description field of our member profiles with the keywords education (found 98 profiles) and educational (found 22 profiles). You can try other variations (e.g. "education research") with Ning profile search under the Search tab above.

With this many members having some interest in education, we could try setting up an education focus group to look at issues related to communication of education research and methods.

I might not be able to do this immediately, but if you are interested in joining or helping to start such a group, please let me know.

Best regards, Peter

Article - No Lessons learnt - comments welcome

Dear Abdur,

Your article is excellent, as an introduction to problems in disaster management in Pakistan, or any country I suspect. For comparison, you might like to look at how well or how badly Queensland (Australia) is now dealing with a similar (or perhaps larger) scale of flooding, but in a much less complex social environment. I hope your article will have a sequel.

Since I work at an anthropological museum, I will ask an anthropological question... do any of the institutions you mention have a visible core of expert staff, or 'critical mass' in terms of relevant human skills and interests? Perhaps the picture is mixed, with some offices having active, sincere, and skilled staff, and others not. The question then is how to unite the people with real skills into an effective civil emergency network. Or, if there are are clear differences in the skills and culture of the different organisations, can the differences be made more explicit, in order to avoid the confusion of responsibilities, even if the overall mandate is the same?

Best regards, P.

Dear Abdur,

We do not currently have a dedicated 'Feedback' forum for already published work, unless one of group pages happens to suit. I have moved your request to the 'Special help' request forum. You could also ask for this kind of feedback in a posting to your own blog page within the Research Cooperative (see 'My page' in top menu after logging in).
