Dear Tulasi,
The tsunami has not been very high in most places, but it has caused severe damage over a vast length of the Japanese coastline. More than 4 million homes are without electricity, night has fallen, and no one knows what has happened in all the small local towns and villages. The main earthquake was offshore, so the shaking seems to have caused relatively little damage, but again there is significant damage over a vast area and it is not known how many people have been hurt and killed. Certainly a huge number of homes will be unusable, even if the residents were not hurt. A lot of fishing boats have been wrecked.
We felt the quake in Osaka - a long slow wave indicating huge power a long distance away. I thought it might be China, because Yunnan had a bad earthquake yesterday.... but it was here in Japan.
