Dear Amira,
Thanks very much for joining. I have very good memories of Alexandria, from a short visit in 2001. I was in Egypt for a month, and spent most of my time exploring the markets (suk) of Cairo talking to the people selling 'ulas (the root crop).
In Alexandria, I wanted to see the underwater ruins of Cleopatra's lighthouse. To do this required taking a charter boat outside the seabreak. The water was filthy but still clear enough to see amazing and wonderful objects from AD 300, lying on the seabed just a few metres below the surface. Afterwards I enjoyed a meal of home-cooked 'ulas with spinach.
Cheers, Peter (Admin. and National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka)
