Topics covered in the workshop
6th Feb 2010 (Sat) 10:00 am 17:00 pm
- In the morning, How to Prepare Articles for Publication in English-Language Clinical and Life Science Journals.
- In the afternoon, How to Prepare Tables and Graphs for Publication in Scientific Journals.
Workshop Overview
In the morning, participants will learn how to prepare scientific articles for publication in English-language, peer-reviewed, biomedical journals. After reviewing the development and importance of the scientific article, we will examine in detail the function, content, and organization of each part of the article and address common problems in preparing each part. In the process, we consider issues relating to authorship, evidence-based medicine (such as the CONSORT Statement), statistical reporting, and the appropriate use of references. We also discuss issues that arise in submitting and publishing articles, including guidelines for authors, ethical issues in conducting and publishing research, electronic submittal, and the editorial process.
In the afternoon, participants will learn the components, uses, design, strengths, and weaknesses of tables and graphs suitable for publishing in scientific journals. Participants will learn specific principles and applications of various tables and graphs, as well as a simple process for determining the most effective way to display data to meet specific communication goals.
Target Audience
Life science professionals wishing to learn how to publish biomedical research in English-language journals: researchers, clinicians, laboratory scientists, educators, post-doctoral trainees, and graduate students.
Note: Researchers and students from any subject area are welcome attend, but the workshop will focus on the needs of authors publishing in biomedical journals. Time will be provided to address any questions about publishing in other fields of science.
