Minimum freelance rates - suggestions from the SfEP, UK

The Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) in the UK has published a table of suggested hourly rates .

These are given in British pounds, so you may want to convert to another currency using one of the currency conversion services listed here .

In terms of Japanese yen, the suggested rates would be reasonable. The total cost or price for editing a journal paper or book chapter would be easily affordable for a full-time researcher in Japan (where I happen to work). But for researchers in many countries, the rates for a few hours of professional assistance might be equivalent to their income for a week, or a month.
