Hello "Editors & Proofreaders",

Today I had a good message from a serious researcher who might join our network, but first wanted to ask me if we could help him format a paper for publication (don't publishers do formatting anymore?).

This is the reply I gave.

What else could I or should I have said?

Dear XYZ,

"Thanks very much for asking. If you join our network, you can easily post your request in the form for editing requests, and also in the group for editors and proofreaders. It is very easy to find people in our network, but it is not an automatic process.... you need to join the network and explain your needs yourself.

I can help if you have questions about how to use the network.

One of the main worries for authors is cost. You can ask for volunteer help, but unless someone has a special interest in your subject, it is hard to find a volunteer. If you can offer a small payment, or a full payment, it becomes easier.

It is best to be very frank about what you can offer. If you are willing to pay a full professional cost, you can also ask for a trial, or set a cost limit.

There are many ways to negotiate these matters, but I cannot do this for every person who joins our network (I am also a full time researcher!).

Best regards, Peter"
