Work: Mathematics; Calculus of variations and optimal control; Optimization; fractional calculus; time scales; Systems Biology
Biographical: Delfim F. M. Torres is a tenured associate professor of Mathematics with habilitation at the Department of Mathematics of University of Aveiro, Portugal, and coordinator of the Systems and Control Group of the Center for Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications (CIDMA) of the same institution. In addition, he is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (IJAMAS), Associate Editor of The Australian Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications (AJMAA), Associate Editor of the International Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Optimisation (IJMMNO), and member of the editorial board for Advances in Dynamical Systems and Applications (ADSA). He is also serving as an Associate Editor for the SIAM Conference on Control and Its Applications (CT13), to be held in San Diego, USA, July 8-10, 2013 (joint with the 2013 SIAM Annual Meeting). He obtained a B.Sc. in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 1994, a M.Sc. in Optimization and Control Theory from University of Aveiro in 1998, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of Aveiro in 2002. His main research area is calculus of variations and optimal control; optimization (MSC 49-XX), with emphasis on regularity of solutions and necessary optimality conditions, and more recently fractional derivatives and integrals (MSC 26A33), dynamic equations on time scales or measure chains (MSC 34N05), and epidemiology (MSC 92D30). Aside from other publications, he has co-authored a book about the Fractional Calculus of Variations with Imperial College Press and World Scientific Publishing, 2012, and around 40 papers in international journals ranked in the 1st quartile by ISI Web of Knowledge, according with the Journal Citation Reports Science Edition as released in 2012. He has a strong experience in graduate and post-graduate student supervision and teaching in applied mathematics, both in Portugal and abroad. Moreover, he has been team leader and member in several national and international R&D projects, including EU projects and networks. He is currently (2011-2014) a Key Scientist of the European Marie Curie Project SADCO (Sensitivity Analysis for Deterministic Controller Design), Network for Initial Training, under the 7th Framework Programme FP7-PEOPLE-2010-ITN, grant agreement number 264735-SADCO. Delfim F. M. Torres is the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Applications (PDMA), a joint PhD offer of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Aveiro (DMAT-UA) and of the Department of Mathematics and Applications of the University of Minho (DMAT-UM), and supported by the Centre for Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications (CIDMA) and Centre of Mathematics (CMAT). Moreover, he has supervised the following 7 PhD students in Mathematics: Nuno R. O. Bastos (IP Viseu), Artur M. C. Brito da Cruz (IP Setúbal), Rui A. C. Ferreira (Lusophone University, Lisbon), Gastão S. F. Frederico (University of Cape Verde, Praia), Paulo Gouveia (IP Bragança), Helena Sofia Rodrigues (IP Viana do Castelo), and Cristiana J. Silva (post-doc UA). Furthermore, he is currently supervising 3 PhD students. Delfim F. M.
