Transcription - REQUESTS

Writers, publishers, and translation companies can use this forum to request transcription services for transcribing hand-written texts, interview recordings, conference recordings, and other materials

As an example, there are now many plant specimen databases provided by herbaria around the world. Plant collectors often write labels in their own language, and handwriting styles also change over the centuries (many collections have very old samples!).

For modern botanists, it is often helpful to find a local language expert who can transcribe old, handwritten labels and then translate them. Some collection managers employ staff to at least transcribe labels into digital text so that more information can be easily found.

An offer to help write requests for help

Services archive

If you need help to make any kind of request for help, in our forums, then I can help you.If English is not your first language, it might seem difficult to write a public request. Or even if English is your first language, it might seem difficult. I am making this offer because I want to encourage writers to seek help in our forums. The best way to do this is with some actual examples. Generally speaking, research writers are a both extrovert and shy. We want to have our work published, but we resist showing it to others before it is published. It is not always necessary for writers to seek help. We should also attempt to be independent, in order to gain experience and confidence, and also so we can discover our own limitations and appreciate help when it is given. Some brilliant writers do eventually become capable of writing flawless papers, without any outside help. There is very little history of researchers openly requesting help, in public forums, but we should not be shy about making such requests. There is a need to be discreet however, especially when the writing involves more than one author, or research that is in some way sensitive. Ideally, the lead or senior author will have authority to seek out help, and can do this without causing embarrassment for the coauthors. In most situations, it is good if we can publicly acknowledge the help given by others, whether or not the help is voluntary or for payment. If you would like to find a volunteer to help, with editing or translation, for example, then please indicate that this help will be acknowledged, if it has been useful. This will make your request for a volunteer much more attractive.

Specialist editing - ethnobotany, archaeobotany and related fields

Editing - OFFERS

Dear Sergey,

Sorry, no - your area is far from my experience.

When asking for help, it is best to state say if you can (i) offer payment of some kind, or (ii) assistance in return, or (iii) say that you are hoping to find a volunteer with interest in your subject.

Alternatively, you might be hoping for any of these options!

Best regards, Peter

Specialist editing - ethnobotany, archaeobotany and related fields

Editing - OFFERS

I can volunteer as a specialist editor for original research manuscripts that:(1) are intended for publication, (2) are written in English, and (3) involve ethnobotany, archaeobotany or the related fields of agricultural history and plant domestication. These are all areas with which I am involved for my own research. It is useful for me to learn about the work that others are doing in these areas, and to help others at the same time. This offer is conditional on time being available. Please do not ask me to read and edit something just a few days before you have a deadline to meet. If more time is available, it is more likely that I will be able to help.
