Previous employment 2011 January to 2012 November, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Swindon: Governor; 2008 November to 2009 June (fixed-term post): Health and Safety Executive (HSE):  Policy Adviser: promoted the Institute of Directors (IoD), HSE and Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland leading health and safety at work director guidance among many external stakeholders. 1998 February to 2008 October: IoD (post made redundant in October 2008): Head of Devolved Government and Health Policy (from 2007 August): formerly Head of Health and Environment; Head of Health, Environment & Transport, and Business Research Executive):  I headed policy on healthcare, health and wellbeing, health and safety, NHS reform, environment, energy, land-use planning, transport, corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, science policy, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales devolved issues, heading United Kingdom and European Union lobbying, extensive stakeholder engagement and networking in all of those areas.  I worked on the New Economics Foundation (NEF) and Mutuo “The Mutual State” project, including major input to The Mutual Health Service (IoD & NEF, November 2002) – and helped create NHS foundation trusts. I also led the IoD Policy Unit work on the creation of the leading health and safety at work guidance.  I conducted and analysed surveys of IoD members, worked with academia and was Policy Editor, IoD News.  I wrote over 20 policy papers and dozens of public policy responses, including Health Matters in Business – Health at Work and Management, Mutuality and Risk: Better Ways to Run the National Health Service. 1990–1998 January: Wiltshire Health Authority (and antecedents to the Authority):  Information Analyst: statistical analyst for public health, demographics and resource allocation. 1986–1989: Self Start Limited:  Director and Company Secretary: headed administration in a training-sector small enterprise. 1984–1986: University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate: Team Leader: Ordinary (O) level combined science (physics): twice yearly (formerly Assistant Examiner). 1984–1985: New College, Swindon:  Lecturer (Grade I): physics [O and A (Advanced) levels] and computing - including programming. 1981-1984: Science and Engineering Research Council: Scientific Administrator: Joint Secretary, Computing and Communications Sub-Committee. 1979-1980: De La Salle Sixth Form College, City of Salford:  Assistant Teacher: O and A level physics, mathematics for science, and general studies.
