Tokelau Science page established at Research Cooperative

Services archive

See the Tokelau Science page here (regarding archaeological, historical and environmental research in the Tokelau Islands, in the Pacific Ocean). This a large multidisciplinary project that recently received funding from the USA National Science Foundation (NSF).

Starting a new research on reasons for delayed presentation of HIV patients.

Dear Misau,Here is another thought. Using the internet as part of your research could also be formally incorporated into your research plan... i.e. it would be good to be systematic in your approach to existing sites and networks, including our network.Keep a record of the sites and people you contact, the questions you ask, and the responses you receive. Some sites offer polls that you can set up with simple questions in order to automatically collate responses to multiple choice questions, and so on. These could be useful for helping you field-test questions online before taking them into a particular location (whether or not they are used for quantitative approaches or for semi-structured interviews). Our network is primarily aimed at helping research-related communication - at any stage in the research process. When we do field work for example, it is often important to start writing initial field reports even before the fieldwork is completed, so that supporting organisations can receive feedback and confirmation of your effort immediately. Will such reports be needed in your work? What approaches have you made to sites, groups, or networks where specialists and non specialists are discussing medical issues in general, and Africa in particular, or HIV/AIDs in particular, or hospital services in particular? What people and organisations can you approach through the internet portals of your own country, as part of your research planning and activity?Cheers, Peter

Starting a new research on reasons for delayed presentation of HIV patients.

Dear Misau,Hi - I just looked up 'phenomenology' in a dictionary, and I would say that is merely a part of what is required for ethnographic research. And I suppose 'grounded theory' is merely a reference to starting with a theory that has some basis in previous experience and research. So I would suggest starting with a list of possible explanations based on (a) what other people have said about similar problems (why patients avoid hospitals) in similar social and economic circumstances, and (b) your own thoughts on the subject, and then use an ethnographic approach to start learning about the possible reasons, i.e. by talking to all parties involved, on the hospital side and on the patient side (and noting that some patients may also be former hospital staff), and by being open to all relevant data and all explanations offered (and also all concerns and questions, as not all parties may have their own explanations). When you start understanding the situation better, you can then decide which subtopic might be most critical to explore with a more quantitative or more intensive qualitative approach, depending on the goals of your research (e.g. some odd detail that only arises with some cases might appear minor in numerical terms, but might actually be a clue to something socially or biologically significant and unrecognised). If you only follow research directions that are obvious and fit prior expectations, then you may miss the chance to investigate something new for theory and/or new for practical care of patients and/or new in terms of the biology of the disease. If people reject the idea that they are suffering from a disease, is that because they have not seen the results of effective treatment, or because they do not see themselves as being at risk? How do people's own theories relate to their behavior and reasons for accepting or rejecting treatment? And here I mean their theories about the role and safety of hospitals and medicine, as well as their theories about what modern medicine recognises as disease. How do their own theories relate to their own personal conditions, versus the conditions of other people they know or have heard about? In biological terms, every individual reacts slightly differently to any disease, so it is important to understand individual cases, as well as average or common responses. This is how important discoveries have already been made about the resistance of some individuals to the progression of AIDS after HIV infection.Do such individuals, as natural survivors, play an important role locally in how other people view their own risks and need for hospital management? Theory 1: such natural survivors are present in your sample area, and Theory 2: they have a social role because of their natural resistance without hospital management, and Theory 3: people base their judgement of risk on the most hopeful scenario they can find, not on any kind of objective probability, which is in any case difficult to calculate if the relevant information is not enough. These are just examples to keep in mind. You will probably find that the questions that are relevant or most interesting or approachable for you are different, after taking an ethnological/phenomenological approach to start with.P.

Research Cooperative projects

Services archive

After some consideration, I decided to suggest what kinds of topics and projects might be suitable for active support by the Research Cooperative. Please see our new Topics page. The suggestions made on the Topics page do apply here, in the Projects forum. This forum is open to all members for announcements, suggestions, initial thoughts, and discussion regarding any research-related project.

Risk communication in environment and health

Services archive

Dear Richard,Sorry for not responding to this sooner. I can easily start a new group, but we would need to focus on aspects related to communication about risk, through any kind of publishing. An aim of the group (for example) could be to introduce and discuss (a) journals and publishers that report on risk behaviour, management and communication, and/or (b) the media used to communicate research-based knowledge about risk to communities that face risk.If this seems useful to you, and you can help me with administration of the group, then I can set up a group. I am sure that there will not be much activity initially (and not much work administratively), but over time, the group membership will grow and it may become an interesting and useful addition to our Research Cooperative activities.Best regards, Peter (Admin, Research Cooperative)

Research Cooperative Review - first announcement

Services archive

From the administration panel of the Research Cooperative, it is possible to broadcast messages to every member of the Research Cooperative. This is a power that has to be used very sparingly, as most of us are flooded with too many email messages of limited interest. Our messages have been primarily intended to be occasional reminders that the Research Cooperative still exists, and that we welcome use of our forums by all our members.Until now, the only messages I have sent have been directly concerned with development of the Research Cooperative itself. If any members have information that they think would be of general interest to all or many of our members, then I can consider whether to include it, as part of a new newsletter called: Research Cooperative Review (RCR) This is a revised version of the first announcement. The aims of the Review are strictly as follows:1. UPDATE: To comment on various aspects of development of the Research Cooperative network and website.2. REVIEW: To briefly introduce other online research networks as they appear and develop, with special attention to complementarities between our network and other networks.3. ANNOUNCEMENTS: To pass on non-urgent announcements of general interest to members of the Research Cooperative, by any member of the Research Cooperative.Such announcements should not relate to personal or commercial writing projects or research activities. They should be used to introduce public or NPO projects that concern research networks, research writing, science writing, editing, translation, illustrating, and publishing.e.g. announcements for academic/research writing courses, new publishing initiatives, new communication projects within the Research Cooperative, or announcements about new research-related networks.Word length is limited to 100 words per announcement, approximately. Each announcement should state the title, authorship, and contact details. Announcements will be edited if necessary. Our first issue will be in early 2009. Any comments, suggestions and contributions are welcome hereThank you (Peter Matthews, for the Research Cooperative).

Experimental Writing Project

Services archive

The primary aim of the Research Cooperative is to provide some very particular functions within the world of research writing and publishing:(1) Better communication between all parties involved in the process (including publishers and those who can offer professional language services),(2) Opportunities for people who are still learners (as researchers, editors, translators etc.) to gain experience.Through these functions, we hope to help maintain or improve the communication of research to other specialists, and to the world at large.Unlike many other research-related social networks, our primary aim is not to be a venue for discussions, although discussion is possible and welcomed. Other networks provide ample opportunities for discussion. However, it would be good if we can find some way to encourage members to return to the site, to actively use our forums, and to remain familiar with development of the Cooperative. One possibility is to encourage use of the site and our forums through the medium of an Experimental Writing Project. What I have in mind is a non-fiction writing project in which any member may establish a team of agent, author, editor and reviewer to write a short essay on a particular topic, edit the writing, review the result, and then submit to an Experimental Writing Project page.Copyright would belong to the author or authors, and authors would be free to use their work in any other context. The project would be 'experimental' in at least two ways:(1) Authors would be free to experiment with any non-fiction writing style, and(2) As a form of online publishing. In most cases, I expect, the agent and primary author would be the same person, but they could be different people. The author, editor, and reviewer would obviously need to be different people, for the project to be meaningful. Some of members might like to be volunteer agents, taking on the role of setting up a writing team, getting a piece edited and reviewed, and then submitting it to our Experimental Writing Project. As volunteer agents, they might also like to help authors find other publishers to publish the resulting work.Of course, the model suggested here could be used to prepare articles for publishing independently of the Experimental Writing Project. This would be the best possible result. Some other matters need to be considered before going ahead with this idea.At this stage, I would welcome any comments and expressions of interest.

Ethnobotany reviewing

Services archive

Dear Kumar,Hi. Thanks. I would like to look at this later in May, as I am busy with my own writing at the moment. Meanwhile, I suggest you visit our page for the journal Ethnobotany Research and Applications. There may be people there who would also be intersted to see your paper.Best regards, Peter
